Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced underwriter with significant captive insurance experience to join our growing team. The Senior Captive Insurance Underwriter will be responsible for underwriting complex property and casualty captive insurance programs with for high-performing middle market/large accounts (gross written premiums exceeding $500,000). This role requires multi-class underwriting expertise across various industries, meticulous risk assessment capabilities, and the ability to negotiate and structure profitable captive insurance solutions. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with brokers, captive managers, and internal stakeholders to ensure optimal risk management outcomes and client satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluate complex captive insurance submissions across multiple property and casualty lines, ensuring thorough analysis of risk exposures, loss histories, financial statements, actuarial reports, and related documentation as it relates to our delegated underwriting authority and other program obligations.
- Help develop customized captive insurance solutions that align with client objectives, ensuring appropriate pricing, terms, conditions, and compliance with company underwriting guidelines.
- Manage an assigned book of business with gross written premiums exceeding $500K per account; responsible for achieving profitability targets and renewal retention objectives.
- Collaborate closely with brokers, captive managers, and clients to clearly communicate underwriting decisions, negotiate terms effectively, and maintain strong professional relationships.
- Conduct detailed analysis of claims experience and loss control measures to assess risk quality and recommend appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
- Prepare comprehensive underwriting reports outlining risk assessments, pricing rationale, coverage recommendations, and profitability projections.
- Act as a technical expert within the underwriting team, providing guidance and mentorship to junior underwriters and support staff.
- Participate in client meetings, presentations, industry conferences, and workshops to promote company expertise in captive insurance solutions.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive underwriting experience in property and casualty insurance with demonstrated expertise managing accounts exceeding $500K in gross written premium.
- Familiarity with AM Best-rated fronting carriers and reinsurance arrangements.
- Extensive knowledge of captive insurance structures including single-parent captives, group captives, reinsurance arrangements, and alternative risk transfer mechanisms.
- Strong analytical skills with proven ability to interpret complex financial data, actuarial analyses, loss histories, and exposure information.
- Exceptional negotiation skills with the ability to clearly articulate underwriting rationale to brokers and clients.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word) and familiarity with underwriting software systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation or equivalent professional certification.
- Prior experience working directly with captive managers or within a captive insurance consulting environment.
- Associate in Captive Insurance (ACI) designation
Expected Working Conditions:
- Office Environment: Primarily based in a home office setting with standard office hours. However, flexibility is required to accommodate the demands of the role.
- Travel: Occasional travel may be required for client meetings or industry events (up to 10%).
- Work Hours: While the standard workweek is 40 hours, the role can occasionally require additional hours, including evenings and weekends, to meet deadlines and manage urgent issues.
- Client Interaction: High level of client interaction, requiring excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to manage relationships effectively.
Compensation and Benefits:
Placement within the range provided below is based on the individual’s relevant experience, skills for the role, and location. Salary ranges are only one component of our total compensation package. - Salary Range $175,000-$225,000 per annum for non-production roles.
- 100% company paid medical, dental and vision benefits (both employee and family).
